Aunt Bertha Wins $20,000 in CrowdImpact Competition for Social Entrepreneurs

CrowdFunder and Demand Media held a competition on April 23rd for social enterprises to demo their companies to a panel of some of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs for a chance to win up to $20,000.

Partners such as GOOD, X Prize Foundation, and the TED Fellows Program teamed up with CrowdFunder to host this event and foster the growth of social enterprises like Aunt Bertha.

CrowdImpact was a global competition where 14 finalists were chosen from a group of over 100 social enterprises from around the world.  Finalists included: Matter Inc, who raised over $20,000 for gulf restoration through their hand soap product; Gradeable, which helps teachers give faster, smarter feedback to personalize learning for every student; and Nisolo, which enables talented artisans in the developing world to shape their future through their extraordinary work.

We are honored to have won this prestigious event and would like to thank all of the CrowdImpact partners and social enterprises for their support and inspiring work.

About Aunt Bertha

We collect all federal, state, county, city, neighborhood, and charity program information and put it in one place. If it's based on need, then we collect it. It's pretty simple, really. Using information we learn about programs, and what we learn from the user, we intelligently match people with services that are designed specifically for their situation.  So far, over 26,000 people have used it to find everything from short-term housing and help paying for food to addiction support groups and help finding work.

Enter your zip code and search for a program in your area.

We also offer a tool for social service agencies to accept applications to their programs online.

Aunt Bertha just got even better.

It’s here! The new Aunt Bertha. It’s faster, more colorful and even easier to find help

The updates in this release are based on feedback from the Goodwill Advisory Council – a three-month group of generous social workers and employees of Goodwill Central Texas who were charged with helping us make the search for social services as simple as possible. By using the site and providing feedback we were able to learn a lot through their experiences.
We learned that our two biggest needs were simpler categories and cleaner listings. We heard that our categories and icons needed to be more intuitive. And once someone reaches a listing, they want to see what a program is, who it’s for, and how they can receive services. After three months of study and many long nights of development, we finally bring you the new Aunt Bertha.
